Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal that it must get Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to sign contract extensions as soon as possible.
The former Liverpool midfielder was speaking after Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday and he was full of praises for the duo.
Ozil and Sanchez combined to help Arsenal put West Ham to the sword on Saturday evening at the London stadium. The former opened the scoring with a well taken goal while the later scored a hatrick in the space of 14 minutes 29 seconds to rump up the win.
The duo showed their importance to the team and Redknapp believes Wenger must not allow talks to secure their future drag on for long.
“Arsenal must follow suit and get [Alexis] Sanchez and [Mesut] Ozil signed up,” Redknapp wrote in his column for the Daily Mail, via The Express.
“I love watching Sanchez — he put on a masterclass against West Ham on Saturday.
“He has so much skill and flair but what I really admire is his desire to run and chase lost causes.
“You know that Sanchez will leave every ounce of sweat on the pitch.
“The fact that Sanchez and Ozil are yet sign sends a negative message to players who are thinking of joining Arsenal.
“The Premier League is so tight this season — I can equally see Arsenal winning the league or finishing fifth — and it is crucial they tie down their best players.”
I’m not sure there is anyone who isn’t aware that we would be in trouble if we can’t secure the duo’s long-term future before the end of the season. The players will be in a stronger position in negotiations if we allow their contract run down until they have just one year left.
Keeping the duo at the Emirates is very important as it will help us attract players with equal quality next summer but should they leave, it will send a negative signal to our top targets which wouldn’t be ideal for us.
