Arsenal are reportedly considering a £45m bid for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

According to the Daily Express via the Daily Cannon, the defense has become an area Wenger is keen on strengthening and he is eyeing a move for Van Dijk.

The Dutch international was linked with Liverpool at the start of the summer but they were forced to drop their interest after Southampton threatened to report them to the Premier League over illegal approach.

Despite the Reds publicly ending their interest and Southampton subsequently declaring the defender isn’t for sale, Arsenal are still being linked with him.

The Gunners are reportedly preparing a £45m bid to sign the defender. Arsene Wenger seem like he is going to begin next season with the 3-4-3 formation he played during the closing stages of last season and he will need enough options at his disposal.

Gabriel Paulista, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Shkodran Mustafi, Robert Holding and Calum Chambers are the club’s centre back options but Gabriel, who is currently out injured and Chambers are both attracting interest from other clubs while Koscielny turns 32 later this year and Mertesacker is set to retire at the end of next season.

As a result, Wenger may well need to sign another centre back and a quality option like Van Dijk will be a great acquisition.
