The summer transfer window may be just a distant memory, but with the season well underway managers have already started their preparations for January..
Despite beliefs to the contrary, Arsene Wenger does not deem it impossible that we could land Sergio Ramos and there are reports he still has strong optimism of convincing the Bernabeu star to Arsenal in January according to Express.
Ramos is in talks with Real Madrid over a new contract, with the player thought to be seeking a significant improvement on his current deal, in recognition of the size of is contributions to the club’s hugely successful year. Los Merengues have scooped 4 major trophies in 2014, including the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup, Sergio Ramose being on target in the Semi-Finals and Finals of both competitions. He will certainly not get as much as Cristiano Ronaldo earns but a significant neglect on their part to fulfill his demands could spring the door open for Wenger to swoop.
The 28-year old Spaniard is easily one of the best defenders in the World, and has even become more revered since moving from full back to center half, from where he has taken up a more leading role in the Madrid sides of the past few years. Only Iker Casillas has seen won more Madrid Jerseys, amongst the current crop of Galacticos, and with ten years in the capital, Ramos can claim to be one of the leading heads in Ancelotti’s dressing room.
Wenger is in sure need of such leadership attributes in his own team, especially in defence where there have been few blows leveled on Per Mertesacker as not being vocal enough. The BFG has been at the center of much criticism over his apparent reluctance to challenge for headers, leading to the concession of advantages in one game to many, especially against Anderlecht and Liverpool more recently. With his usual partner Koscielny absent, the now retired German International has found it uneasy being accustomed with the ever-changing partnership he’s had to be involved with Debuchy, Monreal or Calum Chambers, none of whom are proven center backs.
The possibility of a Ramos deal would lie side by side with that of a successful move for Mats Hummels, and were one could actually be more possible due to the downslide of his club, Madrid is on an astonishing 22-win run and to lose one of their core defenders just in the middle of it is quite ludicrous to imagine. Yet more absurd things have happened on this market and nothing can infact be ruled out completely.
That said, it’d be prove to be a pellucid marker laid down of our arrival as a force in the market if we did pull it off. Ozil and Alexis were signed because, though top players, they became available as they were no more wanted by their clubs, which is not the case with Ramos as he is considered a legend by a great section of the Madristas.
