Now the dust has finally settled on the 2018/19 season in English football, Arsenal fans will naturally take stock of how it all went. In truth, it was a frustrating season at times which was summed up by the recent Europa League final loss to Chelsea. However, there are definite signs that under Unai Emery the Gunners are heading in the right direction.
Already though people are looking at how Arsenal can improve next time around. Currently, bookmakers have them 6th in the betting to lift the league title at around 40/1, although many fans think these odds could be improved if boss Emery fixes some key issues over summer. If he does, it would be wise to keep an eye on the odds to see how they react. A great way is to look at NJ online sportsbooks for the most up to date odds and news.
What can the manager do to make next season even better?
Solve the Mesut Ozil problem
What a divisive figure this player is for Arsenal fans and what a problem he seems to be for the manager too. His talent is not in doubt, but does he always show enough heart and dominate games? To improve Arsenal next season, Emery needs to work out how to either get the best from him or sell him. The Ozil sideshow seemed a real distraction last year and cannot happen again.
Shore up the defence
Pretty much anyone who follows English football knows that Arsenal have an issue keeping clean sheets. Their defence is full of disaster-prone players like Mustafi who need to be moved on or retained as squad players at best. Emery must get to work in the transfer market over the summer and sign a couple of top-quality defenders at least.
Invest in the whole squad
Arsenal are known for being relatively cautious with their transfer spending by Premier League standards, but this summer must see a rebuild of the squad. With players like Ramsey, Cech and Jenkinson already gone, they need to bring in fresh talent to rebalance their underperforming squad.
Play with more aggression and attacking instinct
Many Arsenal fans are unsure about Unai Emery for the way he sets his team up and doesn’t really go for the jugular. To improve next season, it may be that he has to change this and adopt a more attacking mentality. With the twin threats of Lacazzette and Aubameyang to play up front, attack could well be the best form of defence. If they can also show more hunger and desire on the pitch, it could be a different season next time altogether.
Next year will be an interesting one for the Gunners
It is fair to say the jury is still out on Unai Emery and many of the players in the squad he currently manages. What is also clear is that Arsenal do have what it takes to play well and win, as many results last season showed. If Emery can tackle the above issues, it could well be enough for a stellar season in 2019/20.
