Why Arsenal Must Beat Manchester United To Sign This £75,000-A-Week Star.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to go any length to land a defender when the January transfer window opens.

After Arsenal manager – Arsene Wenger decided to take the risk and go into the new season with a bit of a shortage in his defence, the French boss has been left with no other option now than to finally open his wallet in the Winter to sign a defensive cover following the injury epidemic currently rocking his squad at the moment.

Recent reports according to the Express are suggesting that Arsenal are considering an ambitious move for Barcelona outcast Jordi Alba.

The Spanish left-back has not been favoured at the Nou Camp this season since the reign of Luis Enrique began in the summer, and it appears the club will be ready to do business with interested suitors at the right price. Both Arsenal and Manchester United are believed to be considering a £25m swoop for him.

Alba joined Barcelona from Valencia after Euro 2012 and instantly made the left back position his own in Tito Villanova’s victorious La Liga team in his first season. Famed for this very potent attacking powers even as a smallish defender, Alba’s perfromances were not as boisterous last season under Tata Martino’s trophless reign, while Spain’s abysmal World Cup outing in Brasil was even more disappointing, where Alba was part of a collapsed defence.

New Barca boss Luis Enrique has decided to revamp the Barcelona defence this season with the purchase of Douglas as a replacement for Dani Alves at right back (bound for a January exit), Arsenal ex-captain Thomas Vermaelen for reinforcement at center half, as well as 29-year-old left back Jeremy Mattieu, to rival Alba. It is believed the boss wishes to replace the often too attack-minded full backs with those who are more inclined to mind the back. Alba has played 5 of Barca’s League games this season, also featuring in one Champions League game.

Arsene Wenger currently has Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal in the left back position though the injury-prone nature of both players may call into question their reliabilities in the long-term. At 25, Alba still has an awful lot to give, and given that United who already have Shaw, Rojo and Blind still consider him a target must give us a signal that we might still make a case.

Arsenal and Barcelona have had a great partnership of player exchange over the years, with Thomas Vermaelen and Alexis Sanchez the latest to swap from London to Barcelona and vice versa, and so that may give us good hope to enter the race for the very renowned defender.

After all, Monreal is an option for central defence, right? And Wenger brought in a 29-year-old right-back too…

So why not 25-year-old Alba?
