Why Arsenal Should Beat Liverpool & Manchester United To Sign This January Target.

Arsenal have continued their search for a reliable defender to add to the current massive shortage in numbers at the back of Arsenal’s defense and are targeting a number of options with the intent of snapping any of the available target when the January transfer window opens.

26-year-old West Ham defender Winston Reid is one of Arsene Wenger’s main target for defensive reinforcement come January, according to Metro.

The New Zealand International has caught the eye of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool with his imposing defensive exhibitions for Sam Allardyce’s team, with his aggressive style matching his physical gifts. With a stall in contract talks between the player and the Hammers’ board, there is a real golden opportunity to approach the player over making the short trip over to North London, with the likelihood of hitting the jugular in the coming transfer window.

Arsenal’s need for an extra man in defence is no news and with an epidemic of injuries threatening to cripple the Gunners’ ambitions for this campaign, Wenger knows he cannot afford not to provide a contingency plan to fortify his rearguard. Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are the club’s only true senior center halves, and any knock to any one of them would plunge us into a very ominous position.

Calum Chambers started his Arsenal career at center half but the injury to Mathiue Debuchy has seen the 19 year old England International play constantly in the team as a right-back. It means we have to use all of our central defensive options in every game – except you take Wenger’s word that Monreal “can” play  central defence.

Arsene, though, won’t be alone in hunting the highly in-demand West Ham rock as Manchester United are troubled with a drought in defensive options. Reports in some Spanish papers have brought the suggestion that they may have escaped a bullet by not signing our ex-captain Thomas Vermaelen and while that may cheer one or two of them, it won’t stop Ed Woodward and co to track any defender with whom we become linked. Brendan Rodgers is also believed to be interested in having a say on where the player ends up as his we-don’t-do-corners defenders are yet to assure him of an improvement from last year’s leaky back four, which in most person’s opinion cost them the title.

The hot pursuit for Reid is definitely justified as he already has sufficient Premier League experience to adapt to any of these clubs. There are really not going to be an awful lot of capable defenders out there in January, save for the Yobos’ and Luganos. The top clubs will likely hold on to their Smallings and Vlaars so it must be worthwhile making the enquiries for the big strong Reid.
