According to reports, Arsenal are on the verge of signing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy for an estimated fee of £20 million. While Vardy scored 24 Premier League goals last season, Gunners fans are split on the Leicester man – mainly because of his age. At 29 years old, Vardy is a risk. Yes, he’s just scored over 20 goals in the top flight but he has only shone at the top level for one season… and most Arsenal supporters believe that Arsene Wenger should have pursued Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain.
If nothing else, Higuain is a proven talent at the top level. Although he didn’t quite fit in at Real Madrid, he held his own and has shone as the main man at Napoli. In fact, Higuain scored an incredible 38 goals in 42 appearances for the Serie A side this season and has now attracted plenty of attention from a number of Europe’s elite clubs. On his day, the Napoli forward is arguably the best out-and-out centre-forward in the world. He certainly rivals Barcelona’s Luis Suarez for that accolade, at the very least…
However, the Argentina international may snub everybody in favour of Liverpool – one of Arsenal’s main rivals for the coming season. Since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield, the Reds have reached two cup finals – a statistic that shows just how much they’ve improved under the former Borussia Dortmund man. And to make matters worse, Klopp was pictured with Higuain’s agent and brother during one of Argentina’s Copa America clashes, which has fuelled further speculation of a move to Anfield.
Vardy had an unforgettable campaign but Arsenal need reliability and consistency – and that’s what Higuain would have brought to the Emirates Stadium. Olivier Giroud has found his feet for club and country in the last month or so but he simply isn’t good enough to lead the line for a sustained period of time. Higuain is. While Napoli fell short in their pursuit of the Serie A crown, Higuain was the constant in an extremely positive campaign for the Italian side. And although he would have come at a cost, Higuain is worth every penny.
At the time of writing, Arsenal are priced at 5/1 in Bet365’s Premier League odds. With Higuain, they would give themselves the best chance of winning the title for the first time since 2004. Unfortunately, Vardy just isn’t proven at the top level and the Leicester man could come unstuck at Arsenal. Right now, Wenger is rolling the dice and taking the cheap gamble – a decision that has haunted him in the past and could come back to harm his legacy as the greatest manager in Arsenal’s long-standing history.
On paper, it’s a no-brainer: Higuain is a better option. Vardy will improve the overall squad but he isn’t the world-class striker that Arsenal need. And unless Wenger is willing to move for another attacking star in the summer window, the Gunners may fall short in their pursuit of the title for yet another year – something that simply won’t wash with Arsenal’s avid supporters.
